Getting Your License

Qualified individuals may apply for licensure to practice:

Who May Apply

This Board will accept applications for licensure from those who qualify for original licensure in Kentucky and from those who seek licensing by reciprocity based on original licensure outside Kentucky.

No person shall be eligible for licensure if not of good character and reputation, if convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude, or judged mentally incompetent.

Admission to practice must be determined by individual qualification.

Kentucky law does not allow the issuance of temporary licenses to practice engineering or surveying.

Methods of Becoming Licensed

The Kentucky Revised Statutes provide two methods by which a qualified applicant may become licensed to practice in Kentucky:

  1. KRS 322.040 (PDF - 6K), KRS 322.045 (PDF - 6K), and KRS 322.047 (PDF - 6K): Initial licensure by examination.

  2. KRS 322.120 (PDF - 6K): Reciprocity (comity) on the basis of having met requirements which are not lower than those effective in Kentucky at the date of the applicant's original licensure.
Examinations

Written examinations are given each April and October. The Fundamentals of Engineering, Fundamentals of Surveying and Principles and Practice of Engineering examinations are eight (8) hours in length and are graded as full-day exams.  The Principles and Practice of Surveying is a six (6) hour exam followed by a two (2) hour state specific exam.

Fundamentals of Surveying                   $185
