General Instructions
Examinations are given each April and October. Please be aware that Ohio is the only state we are aware of that will require you to retake the PE exam if you take it before obtaining the required experience. Please contact the individual states you are interested in before deciding when to take the exam. The application deadlines are February 1st for the April exam and August 1st for the October exam.
I. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
To be eligible to take the Principles & Practice of Engineering Examination (PE Examination) in Kentucky, you must have:
- Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering examination (FE Examination);
- Graduated from an engineering program of four or more years accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) (Note: engineering technology degrees are not acceptable);
- Canadian degrees accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board are acceptable. All other foreign degrees must be evaluated by NCEES Credentials Evaluations at www.ncees.org prior to making application to take the examination. The NCEES evaluation of any foreign degree, and this completed application must be received by the board on or before the application deadline;
- Received written approval from the board, after its' evaluation of this application, to register with the NCEES to take the examination; and
- Registered with the NCEES to take the examination, paid the NCEES examination fee, and received from the NCEES an examination admittance packet.
- Met all other statutory requirements including those relating to character, fitness, and financial and criminal history.
II. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Use the "Next" button to walk through all pages of the application. Answer every question honestly and completely. Fill out all the sections of the application. Be sure to click the "Finish" button to submit and finalize the application.
No fees are required with the application. If approved to sit for the exam, you will receive a letter instructing you to log onto the NCEES Website to register for the exam and pay your nonrefundable exam fee. Do not register on this website until you have received an approval letter from the board office. Approximately two weeks prior to the exam, NCEES will mail admittance packets to those who have completed the registration process.
Please note that passing the PE exam does not guarantee licensure. You still need to accumulate the required years of progressive engineering experience and meet other requirements including completion of the application for licensure.
Retake Instructions
For those retaking the exam, you do not have to complete a new application. You simply log onto the aforementioned NCEES website and register for the exam.
Retake Limitation
After July 2006, an applicant who fails the same exam three times, regardless of the jurisdiction where the exam is administered, must reapply each and every time thereafter by completing the application in full and include evidence satisfactory to the board of gaining additional knowledge. Such evidence may include, but is not limited to review courses, college courses, and continuing education courses. You may not register on the NCEES website until you have received an approval letter from the board office.
